When I was 34 years old I became pregnant with our fourth child. Already the mother of two daughters and a son, my husband and I had thought we had finished having children. I’d even given away the crib and bedding. Instead of elation I felt trepidation. Did I have the energy and resources to properly care for another child? What was God thinking? He had more faith in us than me.
Friends encouraged me. What a gift, they remarked, one after another.
That truth resonated. I realized that they were right. Soon I relaxed and embraced this new gift from God, a daughter. We named her Keilah.
A couple of years later, I wrote a first-person story published by Choose Life on how the encouragement and support of friends helped change my outlook on our unexpected pregnancy. When the magazine came out I was surprised to see a photo of me with our young daughter on the cover. I had no clue then that while it has been the only photo of me published on a magazine cover, it would be only Keilah’s first.
Keilah, now 21, has grown into one of the most beautiful, poised, and graceful people I’ve ever met. A model and actor, her fledgling career includes print ads, TV commercials, and film projects. Keilah has taken me places I probably never would have gone on my own … runway shows … a photo shoot in New York City … a movie set in New Orleans. Most of all and best of all, Keilah is an outspoken Christian who shares her beliefs with articulate grace.
Keilah is not the child we love more than our other daughters and son; I am so blessed to be their mother as well and could write about each of them in detail, too. But Keilah is the blessing we didn’t expect.
If you can attest that an unexpected pregnancy turned out to be an unexpected blessing, we want to hear from you. Beginning now through June 30, Elizabeth’s New Life Center is collecting stories, 500 words or less, of unexpected pregnancies that turned into unexpected blessings, for publication.
We want to help others understand that while an unexpected pregnancy commonly produces feelings of doubt and fear, children from unexpected pregnancies often become our unexpected blessings. Tell us about yours.
