A client came in with her husband in June. She was intending to terminate her pregnancy because they couldn’t handle their bills and were not ready for a child yet. She said that she did want to have children, but she was afraid due to a previous miscarriage. Her husband also was afraid because he has cerebral palsy and didn’t want to pass it along to a baby – he was also afraid that he would not be a good father. We conducted an ultrasound and had the client and her husband watch the abortion procedure video. After the video, the client was visibly upset and tearful to the point where she could barely talk. I spoke with her husband quite a bit trying to get his perspective. He was visibly affected by how this was distressing his wife, so I could tell he was not a cold hearted person. He said that this visit had changed the way he was thinking about this decision, nonetheless, he was controlled by fear. I asked him if he knew that his wife didn’t want to have an abortion. And he said “yes”, and asked me if the abortion pill was an option. I discussed the ramifications of the RU486 and his wife became even more tearful.
By the end of this very intense and gut wrenching consultation, I asked the client and her husband where they were on their decision. The husband said he was 60% leaning toward abortion and 40% leaning toward carrying to term. And the client said she was 50/50. The next several days we had several failed attempts trying to reach the client. I finally got her on the phone today! She reported that she is having morning sickness and that is the worst part! That was music to my ears. She sounded light hearted like a heavy weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She has been to two prenatal care appointments and she said her husband is doing better with everything too. She is 11 weeks 2 days today!
