Why do women become vulnerable to abortion? We’ve changed names and details to protect their identities, but these real-life stories illustrate why hard-pressed women turn to abortion:
Dana was in the process of a divorce when she discovered she was pregnant. Her husband had been unfaithful to her. Hurt and confused, Dana turned to a longtime male friend for support and became pregnant by him. Dana balked at at telling family and friends that the baby was not her husband’s. She didn’t plan on a future with the baby’s father, and she feared having to start over with a newborn.
Shawndra’s upbringing had been hard fought, and she wasn’t ready to put another person in that position, especially her own baby. She readily admitted that neither she nor the father were mature enough to take on the role of parenting.
At first, Carly wasn’t considering abortion. She was ready to welcome the baby with her new boyfriend into her life—until she had an ultrasound. The baby’s gestational age didn’t match up with the timeline of her new relationship. With horror, Carly realized that although the guy she’d been with had assured her nothing happened—the drunken night they’d spent together had not been innocent.
Dimetra was already a mother when she faced her unplanned pregnancy. In fact, she had three children and was happily married. They couldn’t afford another baby. She’d been conscientious about using birth control for that very reason. Another baby now would mean becoming the mother of four children under the age 4. Plus, she and her family were about to make an out-of-state move. The timing was decidedly off.
No compassionate person could read these women’s stories and not understand why they were tempted to abort their pregnancies. In some cases, the circumstances of their lives had gotten so twisted that they couldn’t really see another way out. In others, it just seemed the smart, sensible thing to do for everyone concerned.
Yet, in the end, after visiting one of our women’s centers, none of these women chose abortion. Each decided to carry her baby to term. Dana found solace after her divorce in her new baby. Shawndra just needed time to get used to the idea of becoming a mother and to strengthen her nurturing skills. Even though the baby was not his, Carly’s new boyfriend stuck by her and prepared to help her raise her child. Dimetra and her husband fell in love with their fourth child when they saw the baby via ultrasound.
What these women wanted was for an innocent baby to disappear in order to smooth out their lives. What they got was support, love and encouragement … and discovered that was enough.
