Dear atheist friends,
First of all, I wish to thank you for taking the time to write to us at Elizabeth’s New Life Center. I am only sorry that you did not include your name so that I could address this response to you personally. Instead, I am responding in a blog post because I wondered if others may have some of the same misconceptions that were evident in your letter and might benefit from explaining our views.
You identify yourself as well-educated as if to imply that none of the staff at Elizabeth’s New Life Center fits that description. We have many well-educated people who work and volunteer for us, including five doctors of medicine, many nurses, midwives, licensed social workers, professionals with master’s degrees in HR, finance, law, etc., so we are qualified to engage with you on an educated, intellectual level. This is an organization that values the well-documented, peer-reviewed, evidence-based world of the finer scientific and intellectual minds in our society. In fact, we strive for an ever richer, deeper scientific basis for all that we do.
Secondly, you mention that “science and safe access to accurate reproductive health education, contraception and abortion access are all part of reducing abortions overall.” If one wants to talk about accuracy, I would point out that there are a great number of inaccuracies in the reproductive health education curricula that are taught by those who are promoting contraception and abortion in our society and in particular in our schools.
The idea that contraception has no health risks for young women
Most common is the failure to teach about the failure rates of most contraceptive devices and emotional risks. About three-fourths of the 5,000 women we see annually for positive pregnancy tests were using some form of birth control when they became pregnant. There are serious health risks to women who use hormonal contraceptives (classified as a Type 1 Carcinogen by the World Health Organization) in terms of lower fertility rates, greatly increased rates of STIs, and emotional consequences, such as lack of bonding with future partners and children. In fact, some contraceptives (almost all hormonal ones) fail to prevent conception about 10 percent of the time and rather frequently abort a tiny human who is unable to implant in the side of the uterine wall, called the endometrium, because of the secondary action of the hormones. Some contraceptives, including the IUD, ella, and others operate purely as an abortifacient and do not prevent conception at all.
On your idea that abortion access leads to reducing abortions
What leads to a reduction of abortions is people understanding the truth of what abortion is: a deliberate and ruthless procedure which tears apart a tiny human at some stage of embryotic or fetal development. Abortion not only destroys a tiny human being, but it often severely damages the parents who made the choice to end their baby’s life before birth. Similar to post traumatic stress disorder, this has robbed many mothers of the peace they were promised by aborting their offspring. Instead, it often replaces the baby with anxiety, fear, deep regret, and sometimes leads to more serious problems, such as substance abuse and even suicide. I see no value in telling women that abortion is a safe and easy solution to their “problem” when the truth is that it often causes anything but a real solution but becomes a nightmare that does not end until they come to accept the forgiveness of our loving Savior, Jesus Christ. I know for an atheist like yourself, these words do not bring either comfort or credibility, but we have helped many women find the deep healing and peace they desire using sacred Scripture and forgiveness in Christ to help them move on in their recovery from abortion.
The second thing which leads to a reduction in abortions is the emotional and physical, psycho-social, and spiritual support that women receive from their family, friends, church members, and pregnancy centers like Elizabeth’s New Life Center to help them accept their pregnancies and make an adoption or parenting plan which is right for them. I know you must realize there are literally thousands of families who are lined up to adopt infants and raise them in loving, caring families, but there is a severe shortage of infants to adopt. Our findings in our six women’s centers is that women are deeply relieved when they discover that there is a positive alternative to abortion and that we provide the assistance for them to receive this positive, life affirming support system.
Your last comment, dear atheist friend
You suggested that we, meaning Elizabeth’s New Life Center, should “pray for support from your omnipotent God instead of asking for it from those who likely cannot afford it.” This particular statement both gave me hope and caused me pain.
First, I was grateful that you capitalized the word God, which gave me some hope that you may yet find the truth about God’s existence and more importantly, His great love for you and His desire to have you near Him for all eternity.
The second part of your statement was painful because it fails to recognize that we all have an obligation to help one another, even if it is just pennies in a bottle given to a medical pro-life pregnancy center. One of the great truths of this wonderful country we live in is that Americans are very generous and very happy to give, even if it is only a little, because our brothers and sisters are in need and our gifts make a difference.
Lastly, we do pray to our omnipotent God, and He answers our prayers every day with the miracles of women who choose life and tremendous community support of our ministry. We also are also praying that you as well as abortion providers and all those who support and promote abortion in any way will come to know the truth.
I hope that your needs will be met, dear atheist friend, not only from a physical/material sense, but from a far more important spiritual sense. We pray that you come to understand and appreciate the great treasure that lies in each and every human being, no matter how small, that the Creator has designed and the great loss of national treasure that takes place each time one of these precious, divinely created babies is aborted.
